Control probes that confirm the monitoring side can reach the public internet. The pings hit well-known resolvers by raw IP (no DNS); the google.com check also exercises DNS resolution, so a DNS failure surfaces here even when raw connectivity is fine. If they all go down at once, upstream connectivity is lost and the rest of this page should be considered unreliable until they recover.
